About

I'm James Chong.

AI and reporting for safety-critical operations. Founder of Safety Month-End. Host of AI on the Job.

I've worked on safety systems since 2008: configuring them, migrating them, and building the reports and dashboards that come out of them for some of Australia's largest miners, utilities, retailers and government agencies.

Career, briefly

  • 2008 to 2010Implementation consultant for an EHS software vendor.
  • 2011 to 2012Client-side technical consultant at a major gold miner.
  • 2013 to 2025Senior implementation consultant for an enterprise EHS platform: requirements, configuration, data migration, SQL reporting and dashboards, training and go-live.
  • 2025 to nowIndependent. Safety Month-End, AI on the Job, and selective systems and reporting work.

Before that: computer and mathematical sciences at UWA, a graduate start in software engineering at Fujitsu, a year monitoring core banking systems in London, and a food franchise in my twenties with about 40 staff.

How I work

Remote-first, from a small farm in WA's Southern Forests. Cattle, bees, timber. I travel to site when the work needs it. I keep the client list small enough that checking stays covered.

What I believe

AI in safety-critical and regulated work should do the paperwork, not make the decisions. Data sovereignty is a hard requirement. A report should answer the questions leaders actually ask.
